“The one clearest message that we got from this 75-year study is that The Good relationships are the ones to keep us healthier and happier.”

Psychiatrist Robert Waldinger is the director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest and most complete studies of adult life ever conducted. Waldinger described some of the secrets to happiness revealed by the study in a recent TED talk.

His research narrowed down to three main points that contribute to the same.

  1. Close Relationships
  2. Quality and Not Quantity of Relationships

“Loneliness kills. It’s as powerful as smoking or alcoholism.”

Good relationship not only protect our bodies but also our brains. It is a well, not fact ages before no one can live in Isolation.

No Country, No Citizen, No Economy now it is proved that being alone is the reason for most of the problems especially not being happy.

“Aging is a continuous process,” Waldinger said. “You can see how people can start to differ in their health trajectory in their 30s so that by taking good care of yourself early in life you can set yourself on a better course for aging. The best advice I can give is ‘Take care of your body as though you were going to need it for 100 years,’ because you might.”

“When the study began, nobody cared about empathy or attachment. But the key to healthy aging is relationships, relationships, relationships.”
— George Vaillant

Concluding

It is easy to get isolated by getting attached to work, getting held up with other official commitments and keeping it aside not to meet your friend’s and relatives. Nowadays even gadgets and technology has been keeping us away from our family and making each person more isolated.

In what you invest grows so is true in relationships. And they are the core of happiness.

Now it’s your turn to pay attention to the quality of relationships rather than quantity.
